Where Small Is Now

Get Your Business Financially Fit!

by Lily Wong - October 22, 2009

My Intuit coworker Sherry Martin and her husband, Todd Martin (a former Intuit executive turned small business owner), have a very successful restaurant business.  Their Tucson Tamale Company has been in business for about a year, and it has already received numerous rave reviews online and spotlights in various magazines!  Todd told me that one of the most important financial decisions he has made as a small business owner was to make a commitment (with Sherry, of course) “not to take any money out of the business for the first two years”.  In order to do that, it is important for him to manage the company’s cash flow very carefully and avoid short-sighted business decisions.

Having a small business is adventurous but it also comes with huge responsibilities.  Small business owners are constantly keeping an eye on their businesses, watching everything - cash flow, inventory, employees, revenues, spending……

In the month of October, Intuit helps small businesses “get financially fit” by offering free financial advice from industry experts via online events.

On 10/27/09, Joe Woodard, President of Creative Financial Software talks about common, but very avoidable, data errors that could lead small businesses to big financial problems.  Knowing how to avoid those common errors can help small business owners have more money in their pockets.

And on 10/29/09, Amy Vetter, CPA, CITP and Executive Director of Technology In A Box helps small business owners understand financial management and forecasting (something that Todd has done very well while running his Tucson Tamale Company) to meet short-term and long-term company goals.
